The Homeless Picnic will take place Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, 11 AM to 3 PM, 5th Ave. and Fred Hampton Way (behind Maywood Public Library and police department), Maywood

Lorraine Wilson Grace, a longtime Maywoodian, was a staple in her community and beyond.

“She did a lot for the homeless here and for people in Africa. She went on different missions. A lot of ideas for helping people came from her,” said Marva Simmons, a member of the mission department at Progressive Life Giving Word Cathedral in Hillside.

Simmons said the mission is planning to host its third Homeless Picnic on Saturday, Sept. 19, 11 AM to 3 PM, at the park on the corner of 5th Ave. and Fred Hampton Way (Oak Street) in Maywood. The picnic is a way of honoring, and building on, the legacy of Grace, who Simmons said died a few years ago.

This will be the first time the picnic is held in Maywood. The event was held at the Peoples Community Church in the DuPage County suburb of Glen Ellyn twice before.

“Since our church originated in Maywood, we wanted to go back to the area and work with people there,” she said.

“We’ve given out clothes, underwear and other things. This year, we’re giving out blessing bags filled with personal items like hand sanitizer,” Simmons said.

The picnic will also entail games and activities. Simmons said the missionaries anticipate serving between 30 and 50 people.

“We feel that, being homeless, you’re always concerned about what you’re going to eat and where you’re going to sleep. We just want them to take their minds off that for a minute and have fun,” she said.
