New homes to benefit homeless veterans based on need

MACK COMMUNICATIONS PRESS RELEASE || MELROSE PARK, Ill. – Elected officials, community leaders and social service representatives today, Wednesday, Nov. 11, were on hand for a groundbreaking ceremony for a new 39 unit veteran’s housing complex in Melrose Park, to be located at 101 North 14th Avenue. The event coincided on Veteran’s Day.

“We are delighted that the Safe Haven Foundation and the West Suburban Housing Development are able to build these new homes which will benefit homeless veterans and those in transition after having done so much to serve our country,” said Melrose Park Mayor Ron Serpico.

For more than 20 years, A Safe Haven has offered veteran housing based on individual need, assessment and eligibility, including transitional housing, per diem housing and permanent affordable housing throughout the Chicago area. All housing is in neighborhood settings.

“This is an important addition to the services provided in our area,” said Serpico. “Those in sudden or chronic social and financial crisis are able to get help, address the root causes of the problems and go on to live independent self-sufficient lives with pride and purpose.”

Financial partners for the project include the Cook County Department of Economic Development, Department of Planning and Development, Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago, Illinois Housing Development Authority, MB Financial Bank, Nation Equity Fund, LISC Grants and Contracts Management.

Construction is expected to begin later this month. The project is scheduled to be completed August 1, 2016.

Rep. Jones Launches Effort To Keep Balmoral, Maywood Parks Open

Maywood Park

Chicago Tribune || 11/10/15 || By Phil Kadner

State Rep. Thaddeus Jones, D-Calumet City, is sponsoring legislation in the Illinois House to prevent the closing of Balmoral Park and Maywood Park racetracks at the end of the year.

Jones, whose district includes Crete, where Balmoral Park is located, admitted to me that his effort is a long shot, “but the only we hope we have right now of keeping Balmoral Park open next year so that it might attract a buyer.”

The lawmaker questioned the Illinois Racing Board’s decision to take harness racing dates away from Balmoral and Maywood, which had historically held them, and give them to Hawthorne Race Course.

“There was no public discussion about this, no consultation with state legislators, and we don’t know exactly what information the racing board was acting on when it made its decision,” Jones said, adding that he wants to hold a public hearing in Chicago to find out how the board reached its decision.

Jones’ bill, H.B. 2663, would amend the Illinois Racing Act of 1975 and allocate a minimum of 30 days of racing in the next year to any race track that was in good standing during the current year, meaning Balmoral and Maywood.
