Briefly: Fred Hampton’s Life Going To The Silver Screen; Holiday Lights Contest; ‘Born To Die’ Cantata; More

Thursday, December 10, 2015 || By Michael Romain

The life of Maywood native Fred Hampton, the late chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party, will be depicted in a movie to be directed by “Training Day” director Antoine Fuqua, according to Hampton’s brother, Maywood Park District Commissioner Bill Hampton.

He said he hopes filming takes place in Maywood, as well as in places in Chicago. He said he’s also hopeful that the film can hire local actors.

“It will be based on Fred’s life all the way up to his death,” Hampton said, adding that the movie will be loosely based on the book “The Assassination of Fred Hampton: How the FBI and the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther,” by Hampton’s attorney Jeffrey Haas.

Hampton said he doesn’t know which actor will be tapped to play the role of his larger than life brother. He said production conversations will begin in January, although a precise timeline for the film’s completion isn’t known yet.

Hampton said sales of Haas’s book have spiked recently, particularly in light of the Black Lives Matter movement and the police-related protests that have been happening around the country.
