“You know how like when people say when you die, you see light?” Michelle Harris, 18, told CBS 2’s Mike Parker during a recent interview. “I saw a light and I remember people jumping up into it and when it was my turn, I didn’t jump and then the light just went away.”
Harris, an honors student at Proviso Math and Science Academy, said it was a bout last fall with a rare autoimmune disease called granulomatosis with polyangiitis that had her suddenly feeling inexplicably weak.
She could barely breathe. She couldn’t swallow. She was admitted into Rush University Medical Center downtown, where she saw the light, Parker reports.
“The doctors told me, ‘say my goodbyes,”’ said Michelle’s mother Sharon Harris. “By me being a nurse and my daughter had just turned 18, I just looked at her, and I’m like, ‘No.’”
And then, after Christmas Eve, something close to miraculous happened. To read more of Harris’s story, click here.
