Milestones: East Girls’ Hoops Coach Named Co-Coach Of Year; East Football Player’s Signing Day; Phyllis Duncan Deemed Excellent; Maywood Actor In Comic Opera

[By Proviso Township High Schools District 209] The postseason honors continue to roll in for the Proviso East High School girls’ basketball team.

Mr. Ezra PridGeon, head coach of the Proviso East girls’ basketball team, has been named the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association’s (IBCA) High School Girls Co-Coach of the Year for District 7. He will be honored at the IBCA’s annual Hall of Fame banquet on April 30 at Illinois State University.

The 2015-2016 season was the latest in a series of successful seasons for Mr. PridGeon and the Lady Pirates, who finished with a 27-4 overall record and a regional championship. Their season also included a perfect 12-0 conference record as Proviso East won the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title and the Oswego East Holiday Tournament in December.

“It is outstanding that we have coaches in our schools who are being recognized at the state level,” said Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209.

“Coach PridGeon sets a great example, and we are extremely proud of his accomplishments. He is a role model for other coaches and teachers, and he is deserving of the accolades that he receives.”

Proviso East Football Player/PMSA Senior Signs with Carthage College

p-e-kameron-james-033116-6[By Proviso Township High Schools District 209] Kameron James, a senior at Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy and a quarterback and defensive back for the Proviso East High School football team, will continue his playing career and studies at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, this fall.

Kameron, flanked by family and friends, officially signed his letter of intent in a ceremony in the PMSA main office on March 31. Having also considered Robert Morris University in Chicago; St. Norbert University in DePere, Wisconsin; Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky; he said that he chose Carthage following an overnight visit to the school.

“It was a like a brotherhood already,” said Kameron, who will study sports medicine and play quarterback at Carthage. “Now that I know where I’m going, I have my heart set on Carthage.”

Activist Phyllis Duncan Named 2016 Woman of Excellence By Chicago Defender

Local activist Phyllis Duncan, the founder of the nonprofit organization Mothers of Murdered Sons (MOMS), was honored as a 2016 Chicago Defender Woman of Excellence. Below, you can see read the write-up on Duncan that appeared the Defender’s March 23 edition.

Duncan joins other Proviso Township, like state Sen. Kimberly Lightford (4th), Cook County Recorder of Deeds Karen Yarbrough and Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins in the distinction.

Maywood Actor To Hit The Stage In North Riverside Comic Opera

[By North Riverside Players] Rick Lockhart of Maywood will be appearing as a Pirate and Bobby in North Riverside Players’ (NRP) upcoming production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance”.

The production runs the two weekends of April 22nd and 29th, and tickets and more information can be found here.

Rick has been a resident of Maywood for over 20 years and just recently returned to the community after living in New Jersey and New York City for three years. This is his first show with North Riverside Players.

He was active in theatre during his last two years in High School and shortly after. He’s appeared in “Hair” with Elmwood Park Community Theatre, Working and Sweet Charity with Trinity High School, Grease with Circle Theatre and Oliver at IHM High School.

Friday and Saturday performances of the fully staged and orchestrated production are at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday performances are at 2:30 p.m.. Tickets and more information can be found by clicking here or by calling the Box Office at 708-512-7015.

“Pirates of Penzance” (“Pirates”) is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. The opera’s official premiere was at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York City on December 31, 1879, where the show was well received by both audiences and critics. Its London debut was on April 3, 1880, at the Opera Comique, where it ran for 363 performances, having already been playing successfully for over three months in New York. VFP

Athletic Konnection, a Maywood youth sports organization, is in the running to win $20,000 to purchase new athletic equipment for the hundreds of young people who benefit from their services.
