[Proviso Township High Schools D209] The Proviso East High School and Proviso West High School marching bands and drumlines took on a strong field at the 14th annual Proviso East Battle of the Bands in the Proviso East Field House on May 28.
The Proviso West band had a strong showing in the competition, winning first place overall along with best auxiliary and best drumline in Division II. In Division I, Mumford High School from Detroit, Michigan, won first place overall and best percussion, while Mount Auburn International Academy of Cincinnati, Ohio, was awarded first place for best auxiliary and second place overall. Also performing at the Battle of the Bands were Horace Mann Elementary of Chicago and Pulaski International School of Chicago.
The Battle of the Bands was moved indoors to the gymnasium at Proviso East due to the threat of rain. However, that did not stop the bands from performing a high-energy show.
Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, said that the Battle of the Bands has been among the premiere high school band events in the area for some time.
“The Battle of the Bands has been a great showcase for the talents of our marching bands for many years,” she said. “I congratulate Mr. Cletis Seals (Proviso East band director) and Mr. Sam Atcher (Proviso West band director) and their bands for a wonderful show.”

D89 participates in Girls on the Run 5K in Grant Park
[Maywood-Melrose Park-Broadview D89] On June 4, District 89 administrators, teachers and students in 3rd through 8th grade students from Emerson, Garfield, Jane Addams, Melrose Park and Stevenson participated in Girls on the Run 5K in Chicago’s Grant Park.
The program, which meets at D89 schools, strengthens girls to run a 5K race and provides lessons on social and emotional growth. Coaches meet with the girls twice a week after school.
We are proud of our District 89 community members who trained for the 5K and experienced triumph as they crossed the finish line with their families cheering them on or running with them! Go D89 Girls On The Run!
