A Maywood family has been displaced after a June 24 structure fire that left one person with minor injuries, according to Maywood Fire Chief Craig Bronaugh.
The fire happened on the 200 block of South 16th Ave. in Maywood. According to chicagofiremap.net, the fire was reported to emergency dispatch at around 10:14 a.m.
Firefighters and paramedics responded to the fire minutes later. Bronaugh said the fire started in a bedroom and took firefighters around 20 minutes to extinguish. The cause of fire is still under investigation, he said. An online report noted that there was “heavy fire on the second floor.”
The chief noted that, according to reports, one man reportedly lived in the house along with several other family members. So far, the affected residents have not been identified. The structure is so far unoccupied and the residents have been forced to look elsewhere for shelter. As of June 6, the home was still unoccupied.
Maywood Fire Department Looking for Emergency Response Team Volunteers
After having reactivated the community emergency response team, or CERT, unit, the Maywood Fire Department is now seeking community members to take part in it. The unit existed several years ago, but dissolved due to a lack of interest, Maywood Fire Chief Craig Bronaugh said at a village board meeting in May.
The CERT team would help train residents to be better prepared for community-wide emergency situations and provide “critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site,” Bronaugh said, adding that members would also be able to help with non-emergency projects “that help improve safety for the community.”
Interested individuals can contact Fire Department Administrative Services during normal operating hours at (708) 681-8860. Youths and adults are eligible to participate. VFP
