11th Annual Homeless Awareness Fair || 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. || Maywood

This annual fair, founded by Bonnie Stegall, is held each year to shed awareness on the issue of homelessness, among other chronic problems affecting Maywood and the surrounding suburbs. This year, the event will take place on Aug. 20 outside of Miracle Revival Center, 2010 S. St. Charles Rd., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“I saw this homeless lady sitting on the bench at 25th and St. Charles and she was full of feces,” said Stegall, describing how she hatched the idea for the fest during an interview last month. “She was maybe in her late 40s, early 50s. She looked like she had lost her mind and it didn’t appear that anyone was looking after her.”

Ever since then, Stegall has worked each year to put on the fest, which often features free dental screenings, health screenings, school supplies, food, entertainment (see the Proviso West Marching Band above) and more. This year, she said, the Buffalo Soldiers will be present, but the parade — a staple of the annual event — will not happen. This is free and open to the public.

Christ Temple’s Annual Prayer Walk || Aug. 20 || 4 p.m.

Christ Temple Church Maywood (CTCM) is sponsoring an annual Prayer Walk on Aug. 20 at 4 p.m.  The theme is “Walking in Faith & Victory.”

Residents of the Village of Maywood and surrounding communities are encouraged to walk and pray for our families and guidance for elected and appointed officials.

“Dissension has America on edge,” said the church’s pastor, Michael Bellamy. “In times of uncertainty, it is even more important for communities to unite for peace.  Harmony is a result of diverse groups coming together to seek out common ground for the common good.  We must pray for our families and governing officials.”

CTCM hosted approximately 250 participants at its walk last August. This year, the organization is expecting up to 500 walkers.

Participants will gather at Christ Temple Church of the Apostolic Faith, 502 S. 6th Ave., Maywood, at 3 p.m.  The prayer walk will begin at 4 p.m.  Bottled water and a lite snack will be provided.
