Several months after being waived by the Atlanta Falcons, Maywood native and former Proviso East standout Sergio Brown, 28, has been scooped up by the Buffalo Bills. The Bills announced the acquisition on Wednesday, according to USA Today.

Brown, a veteran free agent safety, signed with the New England Patriots in 2010. Since his release in 2012, he’s played for the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons.

Before entering the NFL, Brown was a two-sport star at Proviso East, excelling in track-and-field and football.

According to USA Today, “Brown then spent three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015, recording 36 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and two pass breakups in four games.”

Chicago’s largest black-owned bank at risk of failing

“The financial condition of Seaway Bank & Trust, Chicago’s largest black-owned bank, has deteriorated to the point that the institution is at risk of failure even as it expresses confidence that an investor rescue will happen,” according to a Nov. 3 report published in Crain’s Chicago Business.

Crain’s notes that Seaway is down to a “little over $7 million of capital,” which is “below the minimum banks need to avert closure by regulators.”

The bank’s officials have noted that they’re optimistic that they’ll be able to raise funds from investors. They also cited the $8 million in new deposits that the bank received from the “Move Your MoneyMove Your Money” campaign, a project encouraging depositors to move their money from large banks to small banks or credit unions.

Seaway, which has a local branch in Maywood and is where the village has parked its own deposits for a number of years, recently recommended that Maywood reduce its deposits, according Maywood Village Manager Willie Norfleet.

Earlier this month, the Maywood Board of Trustees voted unanimously for the village to pay down the remaining balance on a $300,000 loan owed to Seaway.

The village had assumed the debt when the former Maywood Market Grocery store failed and the store’s developers couldn’t be found. The village had co-signed for the loan at the request of the developers.

Crain’s reports that Seaway has $361 million in assets and is the largest “black-owned lender in the Midwest.” But recently, it’s been bleeding capital, having lost $12.5 million in the first three quarters of this year.

“Another $16.5 million in accounting reductions—including the $13.8 million deferred tax asset—has eaten away all of Seaway’s capital from the start of the year,” Crain’s noted.

  1. That is awesome news! Congratulations to Sergio Brown! A Proviso East Pirate alumni that is still doing greater things in the NFL. It was a pleasure to see him at the Proviso East Homecoming varsity football game. Continue to strive higher!
