Students at District 89 were treated to some holiday fun in the week before Christmas, with numerous entities sponsoring several days of giving.

At Lincoln Elementary School in Maywood, Principal Yadira Gomez-Munoz and Assistant Principal Amanda Williams facilitated several events and projects for students, including a “Spaghetti with Santa” event on Dec. 22.

“Students came with their families to enjoy a delicious dinner, create holiday arts & crafts, decorate cookies and take pictures with Santa,” noted D89 Communications Coordinator Luisa Berardi in a recent statement.

During a Shoes that Fit program held earlier in the week and sponsored by Nordstrom and New Balance, 72 students received new gym shoes.

And on Dec. 23, during Gomez-Munoz’s “Santa Helpers” program, over 400 presents were handed out by a visiting Santa and administrators.

Local officials, like Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins and Maywood Trustee Isiah Brandon, in addition to Cook County Sheriffs Officers Darnell Glenn and Christina Medina, and representatives from Preferred Meals, visited students throughout the week.

Sponsors for the holiday programs included the Cook County Sheriff’s Department; CH Robinson Worldwide; Sanchez, Daniels, & Hoffman LLP; Preferred Meals; Citigroup; and the Village of Maywood.

“Students had written letters to Santa in their classrooms earlier in the month and were surprised when Jolly Ol’ St. Nick appeared in their classrooms to hand out their gifts,” Berardi said.

Gomez-Munoz said that Lincoln has been doing the program for two years.

“I did it previously for three years at Melrose Park School,” she said. “This season is all about the kids.”
