Letters: Why I Am the Person to Help Move Maywood Forward

Letter to the EditorWednesday, February 8, 2017 || LETTERS || @maywoodnews

Dear Residents,

I am Edwenna Perkins and I am announcing my candidacy for reelection for Mayor of Maywood.

Maywood desperately needs effective leadership to address your concerns as citizens and taxpayers. Therefore, in addition to asking you for your vote for me as mayor, I am asking you to support Kimyada Wellington, Elijah Goodwin III and Rolando Villegas for trustee.

In order to achieve our community goals of a safe town, a new retail store in our downtown section, timely and consistent water bills, and opportunities for development of Maywood, we need a board, myself as mayor and a team of trustees that will work collaboratively for the benefit and betterment of our village.

In addition, I am asking you to support Sinaria Lee and John Rice for the Maywood Public Library Board.

Just as our outgoing President Barack Obama was blocked in some of his goals by a hostile congress, I as mayor have faced opposition from several members of the board of trustees.

Case in point: Wintrust Commercial Bank wanted to build a new facility from the ground up, pay the village $450,000 dollars and hire employees from the Maywood community, but a majority of the trustees voted against it.

Furthermore, in an effort to help revitalize Maywood’s economic development, EGI presented a proposal to reopen the store on fifth avenue and bring in a factory, but again a majority of the board members voted against it.

Despite the opposition, under my leadership here are a few highlights:

  • Actively participated in the re-opening of the Maywood Library.
  • Updated village audits to comply with state requirements.
  • Worked collaboratively with the police department to secure an Illinois Department of Natural Resources Youth Employee Grant, hiring over 100 youth for summer employment.
  • Remodeled the fire station on 6th Avenue and St. Charles Road and two new ambulances have been purchased.
  • Broke ground on an indoor Metra train station at 5th and St. Charles Road
  • Repaved streets on Washington Boulevard
  • Provided bus shelters • Welcomed Checkers Drive-in Restaurant and Beggars Pizzeria
  • Initiated the Flood Control Assistance Program

I am a visionary leader and a “go getter” and I believe we have a strong future and that we, the citizens and voters of Maywood, control the future of Maywood.

This election should only be about the future of the Village of Eternal Light. Finally, I think with good planning and the right people elected to represent our town we can put our town on the right path to prosperity and a great place to live and raise a family.

A safe and secure community, efficient village operations (water bills), revitalization of the downtown area (retail stores, grocery mart, condominiums), increased tax base, are only a few of the initiatives we would bring.

Please join with me and our vision for Maywood — a thriving and prosperous community – by voting for us this April election.

Your vote is essential. Use your vote to make a difference for our town. Our campaign is looking for volunteers. Please contact me if you can help at (708) 724-1942, (708) 203-6872 or: electmayorperkins2017@gmail.com.
