After electing its first African American mayor eight years ago, Broadview seems poised to elect an African American female to succeed him. Katrina Thompson held a commanding, and likely insurmountable lead, as of 11:50 p.m. in a five-person race for Broadview mayor.
Thompson headed up the Broadview People’s Party, which included the village’s outgoing mayor, Sherman Jones, as its trustee candidate. After Broadview residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of a ballot measure implementing mayoral term limits, Jones was prohibited from running for a third consecutive term.
Having garnered roughly 20 percent of the vote with five of the village’s six precincts reporting, Jones seems the most popular trustee candidate in a 9-person race for three open trustee seats on the Broadview village board. VFP
