Throughout the month of May, the Proviso Public Partnership, in collaboration with Operation Care Package, will be accepting donations from community members to be packaged and distributed to troops overseas.

Community members in Bellwood, Broadview, Maywood, Melrose Park and Stone Park can drop off donations at the following locations (among others):

  • Bellwood Library, 600 Bohland Ave, Bellwood
  • Broadview Public Library, 2226 S. 16th Ave, Broadview

According to a May 3 statement, the PPP is seeking donations from schools, churches, businesses, libraries and residents.

“The care packages assembled by these donated items will be sent wherever they are needed throughout the world,” the statement reads.

“Each year we see an increase in donations from the community– a trend we hope to keep up this year,” said Proviso Township Mental Health Commission board president and Proviso Township Supervisor, Michael Corrigan stated.

“It’s a real morale-booster for these men and women serving abroad to receive packages and letters,” he said, “and to see that people here at home appreciate their service.”

Last year, according to PPP data, the organization received $3,188 worth of donations, triple the amount it received in years past. All of the proceeds go directly to Operation Care Package, a nonprofit charity based in Manhattan, Illinois that supports soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen.

“Operation Care Package provides two different kinds of care packages for our troops. The Toiletry Pack contains personal items like shaving cream, shampoo, toothpaste, and a deck of cards,” the Township’s statement notes.

“The Food Pack contains snacks including candy, gum, granola, canned goods, nuts, and a deck of cards. Both packages also contain letters written by students from participating schools. Not only are these letters encouraging for the troops, they also mean a lot to the kids, as it allows them to send their heroes a message of support.”

“I’m confident we can again break our record for number of donations,” stated Corrigan. “Let’s make this Memorial Day a little brighter for our troops abroad.”
