A group called the Concerned Citizens of Maywood is planning a march through the village “as a display of solidarity against the persistent rise in violence in Maywood,” according to a statement released by the group today.
The rally will take place on May 10, 5:30 p.m., with participants marching from 1001 Madison St. to the police station at 125 S. 5th Ave. Both locations are in Maywood.
The rally comes in the wake of two homicides that have happened within weeks of each other in Maywood. Ryan Jones, 23, was murdered in a drive-by shooting in Maywood on May 2. A week earlier, a 53-year-old Lyft driver, was killed in the village.
So far, there have been six homicides in 2017, according to Maywood Police Chief Valdimir Talley.
“Citizens are outraged at the six homicides that have taken place in Maywood,” the statement reads.
“Concerned Citizens of Maywood are attempting to create dialogue, develop and implement programs on the ground to prevent violence, and encourage the respect for local law enforcement and community members,” according to the statement. “It is time for us to stand up and say No More!” VFP
