A memorial service for 16-year-old Villa Park resident Cameron Sanders, who drowned in the Des Plaines River last month, is scheduled to take place on June 2, 11 a.m., at Miracle Revival Cathedral, 2010 St. Charles Rd. in Maywood.
Emergency personnel recovered Sanders’ body from the river on May 18, about 150 yards from the railroad bridge where witnesses said he entered the water.
According to multiple reports, Sanders jumped from the “Rainbow Bridge,” a structure owned by the Canadian National Railway and that is located directly behind Lincoln College of Technology in Melrose Park. Sanders could not swim.
At the urging of Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin (1st), Cook County officials have launched an investigation into the effort to recover Sanders’ body, which Boykin said was marred by miscommunication. Some members of Sanders’ family also alleged that authorities were disrespectful to them and that the search wasn’t aggressive enough.
A GoFundMe campaign launched on May 21 by Oak Park teacher and activist Anthony Clark has raised over $4,500 of its $10,000 target. VFP
