Operation Uplift Inc., its West Town Museum of Cultural History and the Village of Maywood present a Week-long Juneteenth Celebration, which will commemorate emancipation of Texas slaves in Galveston who weren’t made aware of their freedom until June 19, 1865 — two years after the Emancipation Declaration was signed on January 1, 1863.

Take a stroll through our unique local past by boarding an air-conditioned bus outside of Operation Uplift’s West Town Museum, 104 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood. The bus will tour the village’s many historic sites.
- Tuesday, June 13 | Bus boards at 11 a.m. and tour goes until 1 p.m.
- Wednesday, June 14 | Bus boards at 11 a.m. and tour goes until 1 p.m.
Tour donations can be made at $15 per person. All tour reservations for either date must be made through an RSVP to Jeri Stenson, museum curator, by 12 p.m. on Monday, June 12. Call Stenson at (708) 289-4955 to RSVP.
June 17 | Proclamation Ceremony and Soul Food Feast
On Saturday, June 17 at 11 a.m., join us with the Village of Maywood at the Maywood Home for Soldiers’ Widows, 224 N. 1st Ave. in Maywood, for a reenactment of the Union Army’s arrival at Galveston, Texas and a reading of the proclamation informing Texas slaves of their freedom on Juneteenth Day.
A shuttle for seniors may be available between Operation Uplift Inc. and the Widow’s Home site.
Following the Proclamation Ceremony, come back to Operation Uplift grounds, 104 S. 5th Ave., for a festive celebration with music, discussions and an authentic Juneteenth Soul Food Feast as we commemorate the celebration that our ancestors took part in after they were informed of their freedom over 150 years ago. This celebration is from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m.
All soul food dinners will be sold for a low price of $10. All proceeds will go to support the mission of Operation Uplift Inc. and the West Town Museum. Sponsor: westsuburbanjournal.com.

The Boys and Girls Club of West Cook County is asking everyone to come out and support the kids in our neighborhoods! Our annual Walkathon helps raise much-needed funds to continue our program offerings and services for about 400 boys and girls, ages 6 to 17, in West Suburban Cook County communities.
