The Village Free Press will start circulating 3,000 copies of a weekly print newspaper in Maywood and surrounding communities. In March, we launched our first monthly print publication.
Since I started VFP as a news blog back in 2013, my goal has been to provide Maywood, in particular, and Proviso Township, in general, with a trusted, authoritative source of news, analysis and information.
This is a logical extension of that goal. But since 2013, my ambitions have evolved — from wanting to start a digital and print media platform to wanting to create a holistic vehicle for building community: that also means creating spaces, such as our series of monthly business receptions, where people can connect in a deep way; and it means driving the conversation on how the places we love can become better.
This weekly newspaper will enhance my and my team’s ability to build the places that VFP covers into the places we all want them to be and know that they can be.
Although the majority of this weekly print issue will focus on Maywood news, we’ll also include news that happens in Bellwood, Broadview, Melrose Park and Stone Park. It’s a delicate balance between providing too much news and not enough of it. So, bear with us while we figure this out.
As we continue to focus the majority of our efforts on Maywood, we’ll be gradually building our capacity so that we can reach the point of giving each town in our target market the weekly newspaper that it’s residents deserve. We’re not there yet, but we’re getting there.
So, this is the setup going forward (at least for now). Every Wednesday of each month, we’ll circulate 3,000 copies of a 12-page weekly newspaper throughout Maywood; but on the last Wednesday of each month, we’ll circulate a 16-page edition throughout Bellwood, Broadview, Maywood and Melrose Park.
We hope to generate enough advertising and fundraising revenue to eventually increase the number of pages, and thus the amount of news, we deliver to readers each week. That, of course, will take money to hire photographers, writers and deliver drivers, among other things.
If you’re interested in submitting story ideas, news tips or event information to us, note that our deadline is the Friday before the Wednesday each paper goes out to print.
