Maywood resident Vicki Haas was in Hillside on Aug. 24 to help volunteers with the Old Schoolhouse Community Garden assemble a greenhouse, which was purchased through a grant that Haas helped the organization secure from Home Depot.

The community garden includes a butterfly habitat and pollinator called the Sally Schulz Memorial Butterfly Garden, which is named after a beloved employee who worked in the garden department at the Oakbrook Terrace Home Depot.

Schulz, who passed away last August, was an avid butterfly enthusiast, gardener, artist and photographer.

Haas, a Team Depot captain for the Oakbrook Terrace Home Depot, helped assemble the greenhouse along with several other Home Depot volunteers; students from Immanuel Lutheran School; Sally’s husband, Rob Schulz; Hillside administrator Russ Wajda; and Westchester Mayor Paul Gattuso — who provided food for the volunteers from his restaurant, Paul’s Pizza.

According to Old Schoolhouse board member Jayne Siou, the new greenhouse will allow the organization “to continue to grow stronger and more vital to the surrounding community.”

In addition to space for growing organic produce that is donated to the Westchester Food Pantry, the garden also provides educational and recreational, among other, opportunities for area residents.

For Haas, the event was a moment to celebrate Schulz and to help the resident of another community.

“After we’ve left today, we hope that our efforts will leave a lasting impact on the lives of this community,” Haas said. VFP
