Maywood-based Loyola Medicine has agreed to acquire MacNeal Hospital — a century-old, 368-bed community medical center based in Berwyn — along with its affiliate operations, from Tenet Healthcare Corporation, which is an international for-profit healthcare services company based in Dallas, Texas.
As part of the agreement, Loyola will take over local physician practices owned by Tenet; Chicago Health System, an independent practice association with nearly 1,000 physicians; and CHS accountable care organization.
Currently, Loyola’s healthcare delivery system comprises two hospitals — the 547-bed Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and the 247-bed Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park — along with a network of 1,200 physicians.
Loyola is part of the Trinity Health, a Catholic hospital health system that includes 93 hospitals in 22 states.
In an Oct. 11 statement announcing the acquisition, Loyola University Health System’s president and CEO, Larry M. Goldberg, said in a statement that the acquisition of MacNeal “allows us to expand our delivery system, add more providers and deliver exceptional care to a greater number of residents close to their homes.”

MacNeal employs over 550 medical staffers and features a 12-bed acute rehabilitation unit, a 25-bed inpatient skilled nursing facility and a 68-bed behavioral health program.
“We look forward to continuing MacNeal’s committement to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care as part of the Loyola Medicine regional health system,” MacNeal Hospital’s CEO, M.E. Cleary, said in a statement.
“Like MacNeal, Loyola has significant roots in Chicagoland, and we are confident that becoming part of this well-respected system will produce additional benefits for patients and the local community,” Cleary said.
The agreement between Loyola and MacNeal could be finalized by early 2018 (pending the approval of state regulators). MacNeal Hospital would continue to be run by its current management team after the acquisition. VFP
