The organizers of the annual Thanksgiving Day Celebration in honor of the late Eugene “Gene” Moore, a former state representative and Cook County Recorder of Deeds, are calling for volunteers and donations of food or money ahead of the Nov. 23 event.
Shavonne Henry, the Thanksgiving Day committee chairperson, said that the event is designed to continue the legacy of Moore, who would annually host Thanksgiving dinners when he was Recorder of Deeds.
“We have formed this committee to feed senior citizens, less fortunate people and others who just don’t want to spend the day alone,” Henry said. “Gene was a very generous man, always helping others and the Proviso Township community in any manner he could.”
Henry said that this year’s menu will include traditional fare, such as turkey, ham, stuffing, cranberry sauce, vegetables, rolls and desserts, among other foods.
Henry said that the committee would also like to give care packages to those in need, which would include basic items like toothbrushes, toothpaste and hand warmers.
The committee, she said, is looking for people who would volunteer as cooks and food servers, and who would be willing to donate cooking utensils, paper products, eating utensils, cups for coffee and cold drinks, among other items. Monetary donations are also welcome.
Additionally, they will need people to setup and clean the church hall before and after the event, which will take place on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 23, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Moore’s home church, Second Baptist Church, 436 South 13th Ave. Maywood.
To volunteer or for more info on the event, contact Shavonne Henry at (708) 904-3354 or Sue Henry Cell at (708) 525-9067. You can mail donations to P.O. BOX 462, Maywood, IL 60153. VFP
