On Monday, Dec. 4, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Burton Park, 1616 W. Washington Blvd. in Maywood, the Maywood Park District will unveil their Christmas Holiday Windows.

The park district will turn part of Burton into Storybook Park with the help of students from Proviso Math & Science Academy.

Visual art teacher Kathleen Maltese and 40 students accepted the park district’s invitation to create our Christmas displays.

“The entire school changed the curriculum of the art classes for the students to work on the exhibit,” said park district commission president Dawn Williams-Rone. “The book being featured is Rejected Princesses: Tales of History’s Boldest, Heroines, Hellions & Heretics by Jason Porath.”

Porath, a former animator at DreamWorks, has worked on movies such as “Kung Fu Panda 2” and “How to Train Your Dragon 2.”

“His book presents the female role models we never knew we needed,” Williams-Rone said. “These women are rebels and pioneers in their fields and fighters of their causes. They also don’t fit the normal princess mold.”

Williams-Rone said that Porath, who will be at the unveiling ceremony, “is honored to have his book featured for our exhibit and he has even drawn the certificates for the students, which will be presented at the unveiling ceremony.”

Characters being portrayed in the artwork are listed below.

  • Hypatia
  • Josephine Baker
  • Osh-tisch
  • Shajar al-Dur
  • Sita
  • Tomyris Kazakhstan
  • Artemisia Gentileschis
  • Tin Hinan
  • Caterina Sforza
