One woman is dead after a train struck a car at a railroad crossing on Dec. 15, according to multiple media reports and Maywood Fire Chief Craig Bronaugh.
Bronaugh said that the incident happened at around 2 a.m., when a car headed south near 19th Ave. and Main St. in Melrose Park attempted to drive across the tracks while the crossing gates were down.
A Union Pacific freight train traveling eastbound collided with the car and pushed the vehicle four blocks to 15th Ave. and Railroad Ave. in Maywood, the chief said.
Bronaugh said that a police officer on the scene freed a man, who was driving the vehicle, from the car. Firefighters freed the female passenger. Both were rushed to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where the woman was pronounced dead.
The deceased victim was later identified as Jocelynn Morales, 21, of Bellwood, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Bronaugh said that he didn’t know the man’s condition as of Friday morning. According to CBS Local report, “At least three Metra Union Pacific West trains which use the same stretch of tracks were delayed Friday morning after the crash.” VFP
