Students in District 89 schools sang, danced, recited poetry and told stories during a series of events this month designed to celebrate the winter holidays.

Community leaders joined students, teachers, faculty and administrators during the festivities.

The district recognized Westlake Hospital for its generosity at a regular board meeting earlier this month. The hospital donated coats and winter gear that were distributed to students throughout the district.

On Dec. 18, Santa distributed nearly 800 presents to students at Melrose Park Elementary School, 1715 W. Lake St., in Melrose Park. The Melrose Park School PTO assisted Santa in the giving.

“None of this would have been possible without our community partners: First Midwest Bank, Los Comales, Loyola Stritch School of Medicine, Necahual, and Melrose Park Mayor Ronald M. Serpico,” said district officials in a recent statement.

“Thank you all for generously sponsoring Christmas presents for each one of our Mighty Mustangs!”

On Dec. 22, Santa gave out more than 650 presents to the student body at Lincoln Elementary School, 811 Chicago Ave. in Maywood.

“Santa visited each classroom throughout the day, bringing joy to our children on their last day before winter break,” officials said.

“Thank you to Dominican University’s girls soccer team, Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins, Maywood Trustees Isiah Brandon and Tony Sanchez, Sanchez & Daniel Law Office, CH Robinson Finance, Borg Warner Co., Preferred Meals, FHLB Bank, Cook County Sheriff Department and Citibank for your big-heartedness in purchasing and wrapping presents in response to students’ letters to Santa!”
