Maywood Preps For Around $2M In Alley And Street Improvements, To Start In 2018

During a Dec. 19 regular meeting, the Maywood Board of Trustees unanimously approved agreements with Edwin Hancock Engineering for professional engineering services on a series of alley and street improvements scheduled to take place in 2018.

The village paid Hancock a $49,200 preliminary & design engineering fee for street improvement projects on 20th Avenue, from Madison Street and Washington Boulevard, and Warren Street, from 19th Avenue and 17th Avenue.

The 20th Avenue project includes repaving approximately 1,200 feet of roadway, in addition to the removal of deteriorating curb and gutter, the replacement of deteriorated sidewalk and the installation of ADA-compliant roadway crossings, among other improvements, according to a Nov. 29 memo drafted by Hancock Engineering.

The village will fund the bulk of the street improvements with $300,000 in Cook County Community Development Block Grant funding. Construction is scheduled to begin by May 21, 2018 with an anticipated completion date of Aug. 4, 2018.

Madison Street TIF improvements scheduled 

The village will pay Hancock a $126,400 preliminary & design engineering fee on alley and roadway improvements within the Madison Street TIF that will cost a total of $1.7 million.

Seven alleys will receive a series of improvements, including the installation of concrete garage aprons, entry sidewalks and drainage improvements, among other upgrades.

The roadway improvements, which will include pavement reconstruction, curb and gutter replacement and the installation ADA-compliant features, among other upgrades, will take place on South Maywood Drive, from 17th to 11th Avenues, and Second Avenue, from Prairie Path to Wilcox Street.

According to a Nov. 29 memo drafted by Hancock, the “alleys and streets that are selected above were included within the ‘5 Year Madison Street TIF Capital Improvements Plan’ that was recently brought before the board.

“The general intention is to focus on improving existing stone alleys and all others deemed ‘high priority,’ in an effort to address all alleys in need of immediate improvement.”

The streets, according to the memo, were rated one, in very poor condition, based on the 2016 survey. Streets that were rated a one on a scale of one to five were considered in need of immediate repair.

The following alleys are scheduled to be repaired next year:

  • Alley 143 – North-South Alley between 6th Avenue, 5th Avenue, Van Buren Street, and Quincy Street
  • Alley 328 – North-South Alley between 5th Avenue, 4th Avenue, Washington Boulevard, and Pine Street
  • Alley 304 – North-South Alley between 5th Avenue, 4th Avenue, Maple Street, and Oak Street
  • Alley 147 – North-South Alley between 2nd Avenue, 1st Avenue, Van Buren Street, and Quincy Street
  • Alley 107 – North-South Alley between 2nd Avenue, 1st Avenue, Green Street, and Madison Street
  • Alley 352* – North-South Alley between 5th Avenue, 4th Avenue, School Street, and Warren Street
  • Alley 135* – North South Alley between 6th Avenue, 5th Avenue, Quincy Street, and Prairie Path
