Last year, Nike debuted its popular EQUALITY ad film featuring LeBron James and Serena Williams.

The film aired during the Grammys and during the NBA All-Star weekend.

“Equality is about Nike raising its voice and using the power of sport to stand up for the value of equality and to inspire people to take action in their communities,” according to a statement the company released at the time.

This year, Nike Chicago has tapped Marshall High School woman’s varsity basketball coach and Maywood resident Dorothy Gaters for its EQUALITY film series.

“We’ll be shining a spotlight on unsung heroes in the community who are making a difference and bringing people together,” Nike Communications Manager Hetér Myers said in an email statement, adding that the film will be released sometime this week.

As a head coach at Marshall, Gaters has made more than 20 state tournament appearances, won eight IHSA state titles, earned seven statewide coach of the year awards and won a gold medal at the 1986 U.S. Olympic Festival.

“Coach Gaters has been making a difference in Chicago for more than 40 years,” Myers said, adding that the famed apparel company will also partner with Coach Gaters during her annual MLK Dream Classic.

“We’re outfitting every team in the tournament with EQUALITY apparel and select footwear for the tournament,” he said.

The tournament will be held at Marshall High School in Chicago and will run from Jan. 13 through Jan. 15 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day).

According to the MLK Classic website, the tournament features “a loaded field of competing boys and girls basketball teams. In addition to featuring many of the top teams in Illinois, the event will also showcase teams from 9 other states.

“The 3-day event was created by coach Dorothy Gators of Marshall High School honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy and also to feature the upcoming talent of high school basketball athletic superstars.”

The Proviso West boys’ varsity team will play Missouri Northwest Academy on Jan. 13, at 7 p.m.; the Proviso West girls’ varsity team will play Simeon on Jan. 15, at 3:30 p.m.; and the Proviso East girls’ varsity team will play Morgan Park on  Jan. 15, at 11 a.m.
