Last week was jam packed with events and happenings around Proviso Township. Here are highlights from just a few.
Operation Uplift celebrates 50 years
On Jan. 13, Operation Uplift, Inc. celebrated its 50th anniversary with a black tie gala in honor of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. The venerable nonprofit also honored many community leaders during the event, which featured Rev. Otis Moss III as its keynote speaker.
Before the ceremony, some members of the Proviso East men’s varsity basketball team stopped by the Diplomat West Banquet Hall in Elmhurst to help setup for the celebration — a literal display of this King quotation:
“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
During a touching candle lighting ceremony, the organization also recognized 50 people who have been influential throughout Uplift’s half-century:
1) George E. Stone, Jr., 2) Wallace Wyatt Sykes, 3) Lyle W. Frances, 4) Thomas H. Wade, Sr., 5) Harry McNelty, 6) Claude Porter, 7) James Benjamin Alford, Sr., 8) Doris V. Sampson, 9) Hilton Gr.
