Peter Willson, Proviso East Wrestling State Champ and College Coach, Dies at 89

Peter R. Willson “led by example,” recalled his old friend, former DuPage County Treasurer John Lotus Novak.

Willson — who was born in Melrose Park, grew up in Maywood and graduated a two-time state wrestling champion from Proviso East High School in 1946 — died on Dec. 30 from Kidney failure, according to a Chicago Tribune article published Jan. 21. He was 89 years old.

WIllson’s daughter, Debbie Bradley, confirmed her father’s death for the Tribune, which noted that Willson was a professor and wrestling coach at Wheaton College, “leading the school’s wrestling team to three conference titles and coaching three individuals to Division III championships.”

Longtime Maywood-Proviso Rotary Club member John Wood dies

John Wood, a longtime member of the Maywood-Proviso Rotary Club and a Proviso East High School graduate, died on Jan. 12, according to his friends and relatives.

Former Maywood trustee and Rotary member Gary Woll wrote of Wood:

“About 10 years ago in his backyard in Oak Park, John brought up Rotary.  I assumed he was considering joining the Oak Park Club.  But no, he wanted to be in our club and for years was very active.”

Woll said that Wood was a former club board member before he took ill a couple of years ago. He  was also a member of Unity Temple in Oak Park for over 50 years, according to the congregation’s senior minister, Rev. Alan C. Taylor. VFP
