The Irving Middle School Tigers made history on Feb. 7, when they defeated Calumet City Dolton 42 to 38 during a game in Markham to advance to the Elite 8 in the Illinois Elementary School Association’s state basketball tournament.

The Tigers are the first team in the history of Maywood-Melrose Park-Broadview District 89 to go this far in the IESA’s tournament, which will be held at Urbana Middle School, in Urbana, on Feb. 10.

“Please join us in congratulating Coach Owens and the rest of his staff on this momentous occasion,” district officials wrote in a statement. VFP
