The Maywood Irving Tigers basketball team has been riding on a cloud lately. The team made history on Feb. 7, when they defeated Calumet City Dolton, 42 to 38, during a game in Markham to advance to the Elite 8 in the Illinois Elementary School Association’s state basketball tournament.
The Tigers were the first team in the history of Maywood-Melrose Park-Broadview District 89 to go that far in the IESA’s tournament, which was held in Urbana last week.
The Tigers may have fallen to Bolingbrook Jane Addams, 52 to 44, during first round action, but they haven’t stopped floating on cloud nine.
On Feb. 14, students at the school got a special Valentine’s Day gift from Chicago Bulls power forward Bobby Portis, who stopped in during a surprise visit.
Irving isn’t a stranger to NBA players stopping by the school’s gymnasium. Last year, according to the Chicago Tribune, former Bulls point guard Rajon Rondo was spooted playing pickup games at the school, located at 805 S. 17th Ave., in Maywood. VFP
