Hear from the first black on the White House Secret Service detail
On Saturday, Feb. 24, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Ave., in Maywood, the Women’s Community Leadership Council will celebrate Black History Month with Abraham Bolden, the author of The Echo from Dealey Plaza.
Bolden will share his story, as told in his book, about his journey as the first African-American on the White House Secret Service detail and his quest for justice after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.
Be a better ally for immigrants’ rights
On Saturday, Feb. 24, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at 6941-A W. North Ave., in Oak Park, PASO West Suburban Action will host a legislative platform workshop for allies of immigrants’ rights in Illinois. To sign-up, or for more info, contact: Maria Torres at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Close out Black History Month with a bang
On Wednesday, Feb. 28, 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at Irving Middle School, 805 S. 17th Ave., in Maywood, School District 89 will celebrate Black History with a Family Night featuring music, dance performances, soul food and more.
Vendors will have books, clothing and jewelry available for purchase. All are welcome!
Treat your heart to health
On Sunday, Feb. 24, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Westlake Hospital-Brewster Hall, 1400 W. Superior St., in Melrose Park, state Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch (7th), District 89 and the American Heart Association will host Heart Fest: A Festival of Health and Wellness.
