The Maywood Park District Board of Commissioners recently selected Alisa Buchmeier to fill the seat vacated after the death of former commissioner William Hampton, who died on Feb. 8.
Candidates had until late last month to submit applications for the open seat before they were interviewed by Lonette Hall, the park district’s executive director, who recommended five candidates to be interviewed by commissioners earlier this month.
According to a statement released by Maywood Park District Board President Dawn Rone, Buchmeier has lived in Maywood for seven years.
“She and her husband reside at the Mrs. Henry F. Akin house, a historical landmark built by a former Maywood mayor in 1897 and designed by Talmadge & Watson,” according to Rone. “The Buchmeiers lovingly restored the house.”
Buchmeier is also an active volunteer in the village, participating in the annual Village Wide Village Pride cleanup initiative and attending numerous village of Maywood board meetings, Rone said.
“She has two sons, Holden, a 13-year-old who will attend Proviso Math and Science Academy for high school and her son Emmet, 9, who is in third grade at Emerson. Her husban, Loren, is a Berwyn police officer,” Rone added.
Rone said that, in addition to her volunteering within Maywood, Buchmeier is also a travel team member of Children with Hair Loss, an organization that provides free hair replacements to any child with hair loss.
A professional hairstylist who works at Twisted Scissors Hair Salon in Chicago, Buchmeier is the establishment’s domestic abuse training liaison and was instrumental in creating a salon spa day for women who live in transitional housing for domestic violence.
She also researched and brought into the salon the Green Circle Salons recycling program, which provides an environmentally friendly way to dispose of salon waste.
“Alisa is very excited about the opportunity to serve as our park district,” Rone said. “Alisa will be an asset to our park district team.”
Buchmeier will be sworn-in at a park district board meeting on April 10, 7 p.m., at 921 S. 9th Ave. in Maywood. VFP
