Big Week (March 21 – 28)

There’s a lot happening in the Proviso Township area this week. Here are just a sampling of the big events going on near you:

Learn about peace-building

On Friday, March 23, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at Proviso Math and Science Academy, 8601 W. Roosevelt Rd. in Forest Park, the Maywood-Proviso Rotary Club will present a community panel discussion on peacebuilding in the Chicago area.

Panelists will include Jamal Green of Majoostee Allstars, Xavier Ramey of Justice Informed, Leonor Sanchez (Maywood first Hispanic deputy clerk) and Troy Laraviere, a candidate for Mayor of Chicago. The event will be moderated by Osei David-Andrews Hutchinson, the past district governor of Rotary District 6450. This is a free event.

Learn about financial aid

On Saturday, March 24, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., at the Maywood Public Library, 125 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, the Illinois Student Assistance Commission will be presenting “The Financial Aid Process.”

This session provides insight on ways to maximize financial aid to help pay for college. All are welcome. No library card required.

Get your fresh fruit and veggies in Maywood

The Forty Acres Fresh Market will setup an Indoor Spring Produce Market on Saturday, March 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Quinn Community Center, 1845 S. 9th Ave. (enter through Door #3) in Maywood. The market in February was called a Winter Produce Market.

The makeshift bazaars feature greens, snap peas, carrots, tomatoes, apples, bananas, grapes, mangoes and other fresh produce.

Get a free blood pressure screening

On Saturday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., at Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, staff from Loyola University Medical Center will be offering free blood pressure screenings.

Listen to the Battle of the Bands 

On Saturday, March 24, at 11 a.m. (doors open), the Proviso West High School Band will host the annual Battle of the Bands at Proviso West High School, 4701 Harrison St. in Hillside. Admission is $10. Sounds by DJ Lady Chi. Tickets can be purchased at eventbrite.com.

Experience Swan Lake 

On Friday, March 23, 10 a.m., and Saturday, March 24, 7 p.m., at Trinity High School, 7574 Division St. in River Forest, students with Stairway of the Stars and Maywood Fine Arts will perform one of the world’s great classical ballets, “Swan Lake,” as part of MFA’s Classical Ballet for New Audiences program.

Raise the praise 

On Saturday, March 24, and Sunday, March 25, 5 p.m., at Freedom Baptist Church, 4541 Harrison St. in Hillside, the church’s Youth Performing Arts Production program will host the annual Raise the Praise: Redemption Through the Eyes of His Disciples. Enjoy a GAMERS after-school event 

On Monday, March 26, 3:30 p.m., at the Maywood Park District, 921 S. 9th Ave. in Maywood, the park district will host a FREE after-school event called G.A.M.E.R.S. (Giving At Risk Youth Events, Resources and Smoothies).

This event is sponsored by Buona Italian Beef, which will also provide lunch. For more info, contact (708) 344-4740.
