The Maywood Park District Board of Commissioners will host an official groundbreaking ahead of construction work on its facility at 809 Madison W. Madison St.

The ceremony will take place on April 10, 6 p.m. Commissioners are asking the public to RSVP by April 9 by calling (708) 344-4740.

The park district announced in February that they had opened the bidding process for contractors. At the time, park district Commission President Dawn Rone said that construction could start as early as June and be completed by December.

Williams-Rone said that the district secured funding from a bank. She did not specify the size of the loan.

In addition to the bank loan, the park district will also lean on $285,000 in TIF funds approved by the Maywood Board of Trustees last September. According to park district officials, the renovation of the 809 Madison building will cost approximately $1.8 million.

The majority of that money will come from a reimbursable $1.6 million state grant, which required the village to provide 20 percent of matching funds. The TIF funds and the bank loan will cover the park district’s matching share.

The renovations of the 809 Madison building, officials said, will transform a facility that has been empty for more than 15 years, into a recreation center that will feature multipurpose rooms, conference rooms, a room designated for sewing and quilt-making, a music studio and fitness rooms, among other amenities.

Last year, the park district wrapped up renovations of the parking lot and grounds surrounding the 809 Madison building. VFP

  1. It’s about time, but what about the building at 200 S. 5th Avenue? Are there going to be unique differences between what is offered in each building? Or, is this a redundancy?

  2. The Park District owns the 809 Building. The Village owns the 200 bldg. The Park District is separate from the village in every way, like most towns and villages in Illinois. More opportunities for recreational activities in Maywood is a good thing for everyone. Take advantage of what is near and dear to you.
