There’s a lot happening in the Proviso Township area this week. Here are just a sampling of the big events going on near you:
Maywood spring cleanup starts May 2
Starting May 2, the village of Maywood and Republic Services will start collecting large, bulky household items and junk. Smaller, loose items must be in containers or tied and bundled. Household hazardous waste will NOT be accepted. Please have your discarded items at your garbage pick-up point on Wednesday morning of the week Republic is in your neighborhood:
- May 2 | Roosevelt north to I-290; 1st Ave. west to 25th Ave.
- May 9 | I-290 north to Madison; Greenwood west to 21st Ave.
- May 16 | Madison north to Railroad; 1st Ave. west to 21st Ave.
- May 23 | Main Street north to village limits; Des Plaines west to 9th Ave.
Give your input about the county’s strategic plan
On Thursday, May 3, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Maywood Multipurpose Building, 200 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle will host a community conversation about a 4-year strategic plan the county is developing. Look out for the Annual Tax Sale
On Friday, May 4, the Annual Tax Sale, held each year after the second installment property tax period happens, will start up. According to the Cook County Treasurer’s Office:
“If property taxes for the immediately preceding tax year are delinquent on a parcel, they are offered for sale to tax purchasers at the Annual Tax Sale […]
“The biennial Scavenger Sale (conducted in odd-numbered years) offers taxes on properties that have delinquencies on three or more years that were not purchased at an Annual Tax Sale. In Cook County, the sale has traditionally taken place in the fall or early winter months.”

Register for an EPIC summer camp
On Thursday, May 10, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at Proviso West High School, 4701 Harrison St. in Hillside, District 209 will host a free expo and registration event for all Proviso East and Proviso West incoming fresh who are interested in participating in the district’s EPIC Summer Camp, which runs from July 9 to July 19.

Hear Ken’Te Kizer, spoken word artist
On Saturday, May 5, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Maywood Multipurpose Building, 200 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, Maywood Youth Mentoring will host its monthly free youth breakfast. This month will feature renowned spoken word artist Ken’Te Kizer who will speak on “Keeping Your Swagger On ‘A’ – In School And In Life.’

Register now for the Maywood Park District’s summer camp
Registration is now open for the Maywood Park District’s Summer Camp, which is open to young people ages 5 to 12. Activities will include: arts and crafts, wilderness explorers, archery, kayaking and more. The first session will be from June 11 until July 6 while the second session will be from July 9 to Aug. 3.
