There’s a lot happening in the Proviso Township area this week. Here are just a sampling of the big events going on near you:
Enter a salsa contest
On Friday, June 8, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., inside of the parking lot of the Melrose Park Public Library, 801 N. Broadway in Melrose Park, take part in the library’s 5th Annual Salsa Contest. The event is part of the library’s Summer Spectacular Kickoff Event.
Judging begins at 1 p.m. Entries must be checked in at the library by 12 p.m. Register to enter a homemade salsa or simply join us to sample and socialize. For more info, call (708) 649-7400.
Take a course on credit building
On Friday, June 8, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Proviso Community Bank, 1759 N. Mannheim Rd. in Stone Park, the bank will begin its series of Free Money Smart Classes. After these courses, participants will be able to define credit, explain why credit is important, obtain a credit report and analyze the credit report, among many other skills.

Plan for summer at PTMAN’s breakfast
On Saturday, June 9, 8:30 a.m., at Proviso East High School, 807 S. 1st Ave. in Maywood, the Proviso Township Ministerial Alliance Network (PTMAN) will host its last breakfast networking meeting before the summer break.

See a dance show with game show flavor
On Saturday, June 9, 7 p.m., and Sunday, June 10, 3 p.m., at Guerin Prep High School, 8001 W. Belmont in River Grove, Maywood Fine Arts and Stairway of the Stars will present “In It To Win It!” — a dance show with a game show flavor.

Register for a FREE basketball camp
On Saturday, June 9, and Saturday, June 16, 12 p.m. (both days), at Proviso East High School, 807 S. 1st Ave. in Maywood, register your kids, ages 5 to 17, in the 3rd Annual DBL Summer Basketball Camp. This FREE camp will be held from Monday, July 16 to Friday, July 20, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Proviso East.
Draft Day for the camp will take place Saturday, July 14, 12 p.m., at Proviso East, when youths will meet their coaches and take individual and team photos. The camp includes: a camp t-shirt, lunch, water/Gatorade, DBL wristband, NBA player guest appearances, skills/drills, competitive games and awards.

Shop for produce at a popup market
On Saturday, June 16, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Maywood Multipurpose Building, 200 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, 40 Acres Fresh Produce and Maywood Trustee Isiah Brandon will setup another popup produce market.
Shop a full selection of fruits and vegetables, enjoy free food demos and samples (along with meals for purchase). Cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and Illinois Link Card accepted.
Attend Bellwood Library’s summer of reading kick off
On Saturday, June 9, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Bellwood Public Library, 600 Bohland Ave. in Bellwood, the library will kick off its summer of reading. Programs for all ages. Special guests include Brian Wismer of Fun Wizz Entertainment. For more info, call (708) 547-7393.
Register for a 5K Walk/Run
Registration is still open for the Boys and Girls Club of West Cook County’s 5K Run and Walk, which will be held on June 16, 7:30 a.m., at Eisenhower Park, 700 Speechley Blvd. in Hillside. $30 for 5K Run/Walk and $15 for 1-mile Fun Run.
