More than 200 people gathered on a sizzling hot Saturday afternoon in Bellwood for the village’s first annual Pink Divas and Gents Breast Cancer Walk/Run.

“This was our very first cancer walk in the village and it’s been a success,” said Arnetta Watkins, the vice president of the Bellwood Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the founder of a travel agency, Travel With Netta.

Walkers and runners started their journey at the village’s municipal building, 3200 Washington Blvd. in Bellwood. The processional of participants then coursed through the village’s north side streets.

The event was created and organized by Bellwood Village Clerk Janelle Moreland as a way to raise awareness about breast cancer and to raise support for breast cancer patients.

And while many women participated, many of the village’s male leaders, such as Bellwood Mayor Andre Harvey, Bellwood District 88 Supt. Mark Holder, Bellwood Police Chief Jimenez Allen and the village’s former mayor of 16 years, Frank Pasquale, who comprised a full frontal show of support.

“I’m just so proud of our residents,” said Pasquale. “Any time we ask for support, we get it and it couldn’t be for a better cause. I’d like to thank the mayor and the clerk and all of our people for doing this.

“It’s fantastic. You talk about a neighborhood and a family — this is it. It doesn’t get any better than this.” VFP
