A Maywood church is hosting a clothing and household goods drive next week in order to raise money for college scholarships.
The Second Baptist Church of Maywood’s Hayden Memorial Educational Fund will host its first annual FUNDrive on July 28, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and July 29, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the church’s south parking lot on the corner 13th Avenue and Washington Blvd. in Maywood.
The goal, the organizers noted in a statement, is to raise $5,000 “to support the church’s efforts to provide college scholarships to eligible students.”
Those interested in supporting should place their donations in 13 gallon bags or boxes. All of the goods collected through the FUNDrive will be sold to Savers, the parent company of a variety of well-known thrift stores, including Value Village, Unique and Savers.
“They pay us by the pound for every qualifying donation received,” organizers said. “In turn, these items help keep their floors freshly stocked.”
The Hayden Memorial Educational Fund — established in 1963 by Second Baptist’s late pastor, Rev. Wallace W. Sykes, and named in honor of his predecessor, the late Rev. Robert Hayden — is designed solely to help eligible students through college.
