Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood was recently ranked among the top three hospitals in Illinois, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2018-19 Best Hospitals rankings.

Loyola was ranked third behind second-ranked Rush University Medical Center and top-ranked Northwestern Memorial Hospital — the latter of which the publication ranked the 13th best hospital in the nation for the second year in a row.

The University of Chicago Medical Center and Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn both tied for fourth-place among top Illinois hospitals.

Loyola had six specialties that were ranked nationally. They include cardiology and heart surgery, urology, orthopedics, gastroenterology and GI surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, and pulmonology .

Three other specialties at the hospital — cancer, geriatrics and nephrology –were considered high performing.

For its rankings, U.S. News assessed more than 4,500 hospitals across the country, according to a statement released by Loyola following the rankings.

“To achieve a national ranking, a hospital must be ranked among the nation’s top 50 hospitals in a given specialty,” the statement read. “A high performing specialty is among the top 10 percent in the nation.” VFP
