Members of the Maywood Police Department participated in a joint prostitution sting involving the Cook County Sheriff’s Office — along with police in Matteson and Lansing — that resulted in 73 arrests.

The county’s joint operation was part of a much larger nationwide initiative, the National Johns Suppression Initiative, which was conducted from July 25 through Aug. 26.

The national operation resulted in the arrests of at least 473 johns and involved the participation of “two dozen law enforcement agencies across 12 states,” according to a Chicago Tribune report.

According to a report in Chicago Patch, while “most of the arrests were made through street-level reverse stings, authorities also employed online “bots” as a way to deter potential johns, according to the sheriff’s office.”

Police used the artificial intelligence bots to text potential johns who “responded to decoy online ads in nine jurisdictions, including the Chicago area,” Patch reports, adding that when a bot contacted the potential joy, “a message would be sent to warn the person of the legal and social dangers of buying sex.”

The bots deployed in Cook County contacted 241 people. Nearly 1,600 potential johns were sent the warning messages as part of the national initiative. VFP

  1. You’d think that the Maywood police would clean up the prostitution in their own back yard first. They have a wonderful opportunity to arrest the streetwalkers on 5th and 6th who have no problem servicing a “client” in cars along Randolph between 5th and 7th on a regular basis. Heck, they might even be able to catch a few drug pushers that roam 5th through 9th on bicycles all hours of the day or night. Oh, wait! The police are too busy napping in their squad cars.
