A popular, independently owned African American bookstore in Maywood recently opened a larger location.

Afriware Books is still located in the Eisenhower Tower, 1701 S. 1st Ave., but the store has moved from a suit on the fifth floor to Suite 400, on the fourth floor of the building.

The store’s owner and president, Nzingha Nommo, said in a letter emailed to clients that the new locations has three times the space a “beautiful view.”

She said the store will also be open an additional day of the week: Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

More additional features include a new, room-sized children’s department and a black superheroes section for black comics.

In the email, Nommo said that the move was necessary, because she had encountered some space issues.

“It was apparent that every nook and cranny had been used to capacity in Suite 503,” she wrote. “We were outgrowing our space for inventory and needed to spread out so customers could see all our merchandise.”

The fourth floor, she added, is where Meal of the Day Cafe, a black-owned soul food restaurant, and at least two hair salons are located.

Nommo said that the circumstances that prompted the move were somewhat serendipitous.

“Afriware Store Manager Deshanda Curtain-Rodney was eyeing the space our accountant vacated recently and suggested that it would be a great location for Afriware Books,” Nommo explained.

“Turns out,” she said, “our lease had to be renewed in August which just happened to coincide with our official 25th Anniversary date (August 15th). The timing was ripe for movement and growth.”

The bookstore also has a satellite location housed inside of Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago’s South Side. Afriware partners with AKIBA Bookstore to provide additional inventory and cultural event programming at the location.

Nommo said that a date for an official grand opening for the newly expanded Maywood store will be announced soon.

“In the meantime,” she added, “feel free to stop by and check out the new space, and take in the view … Just like a breath of fresh air.” VFP
