West Defeats East 34-18 In Crosstown Clash

Proviso West defeated Proviso East High School 34-18 in the annual gridiron clash of crosstown rivalries on Oct. 6 at West. The victory was the first this season for the Panthers, 1-6, while the Pirates fell to 2-5 for the season.

The Panthers’ win was powered by the ground game of running backs Brandon Smith (#2) and Brandon Gwin-Smith (#8).

Smith, the MaxPreps Player of the Game, notched 21 carries for 174 yards and three touchdowns while Gwin-Smith carried 12 times for 84 yards and two touchdowns.

The Panthers’ defense also shined with a fumble recovery in the third quarter. East had three fumbles throughout the game.

West earned 356 total yards to East’s 166, with 330 of the Panthers’ yards earned on the ground.

The Panthers face the York Dukes on Friday, Oct. 12, 7:30 p.m., at York while the Pirates face the Willowbrook Warriors on Friday, Oct. 12, 7:15 p.m. at home. VFP

  1. I was at the football game, and I will admit it was a very competitive game. I am so happy to see the direction that Coach Oliver Speller is doing for the Proviso East varsity football team to be competitive. I will give the Proviso West Panthers a lot of credit for bringing their A game. I see an amazing future for the two Panther players. It was also cool seeing alumni/graduates from East and West coming together and supporting their beloved alma mater, and the next generation of talent of showing them “Nothing But The Best.” It took a commUNITY!
