There’s a lot happening in Proviso Township, especially during the Thanksgiving holiday. Here’s just a small sampling of events for you and your family:
Meet the Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce president
On Wednesday, Nov. 14, 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Cement Mason’s Institute, 739 25th Ave. in Bellwood (park and enter through the rear entrance), the Bellwood Chamber of Commerce will host a lunch with Larry Ivory, the president of the Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce. Tickets: $10 for chamber members. $20 for future chamber members.

Get a free Thanksgiving basket
The Quinn Center of St. Eulalia in Maywood, is gearing up to distribute Thanksgiving baskets. Representatives with the center said that they hope to distribute 350 baskets this year.
Registration for those interested in receiving a basket will take place on Nov. 13, Nov. 14 and Nov. 15, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Quinn Center, 1832 S. 8th Ave. (Door 3) in Maywood.
A current, valid ID is required to register. For those who are able to register on Nov. 13, the soup kitchen will be operating as normal from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., followed by a Medicare Basics Information session sponsored by Age Options and Senior Medicare Patrol that will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Attend an estate sale
On Saturday, Nov. 17 and Sunday, Nov. 18, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 208 S. 11th Ave. in Maywood, an estate sale will be held. For more info, call Peggy Alexander at (708) 829-0073.
Grab a hot plate of great food for free
On Sunday, Nov. 18, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the Maywood Multipurpose Building, 200 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, Nu World Ryders will host their 15th Annual Thanksgiving Hot Plate Giveaway. Turkey, dressing, mac and cheese, ham, cornbread, chicken and more. Free. Sponsored by village of Maywood and Mayor Edwenna Perkins.
Enjoy a prayer hike and breakfast on Thanksgiving Day
On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 22, 7 a.m. (sharp), at First Congregational Church of Maywood, 400 N. 5th Ave. in Maywood, the historic church will host its annual Thanksgiving prayer hike and breakfast. For more info, call (708) 344-6150.
Commemorate Gene Moore on Thanksgiving Day
On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 22, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., at Second Baptist Church, 436 S. 13th Ave. in Maywood, come celebrate the life of Eugene “Gene” Moore with a free feast. Volunteers and donations needed.
