This year’s Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony in Maywood will be, in the words of Environmental and Beautification Commissioner Tywanna Grace-Rand, “bigger, better and greater than before.”
There’s a case for why that motto could be more realistic than hyperbolic. This year, for the first time ever, the annual lighting ceremony will include a fireworks display, Grace-Rand announced during a Nov. 20 Maywood Board of Trustees meeting.
“This year, we’re excited,” Grace-Rand said. “Our team of volunteers — we have seniors, millennials, a wealth of volunteers — are excited about being part of this.”
Grace-Rand said that, in addition to the fireworks (which will conclude the outdoor potion of the ceremony), the event will also feature live reindeer, s’mores, the Proviso East High School Marching Band, cowboys, horses, a puppet show, a dancing troop from Maywood Fine Arts, an electric train, a saxophonist and more.
This year’s lighting ceremony, as in years past, will take place on Dec. 7, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., outside of the Metra Station on Fifth Avenue and Main Street, where attendees will start caroling. The event will end at the Maywood Multipurpose Building, 200 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood.
