Saturday, Nov. 24 is Small Business Saturday, the annual national shopping day started in 2010 and is sponsored by American Express. The day is designed to encourage people to patronize small, local, brick and mortar businesses around the time when everyone is going wild about Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
If you’re feeling flustered or confused about where to shop small in Proviso, don’t worry! Here are some tips for how you can keep your dollars in town.
Contact your local chamber of commerce
If you need a guide to shopping local, you might want to first consult your local chamber. Both the Bellwood Chamber of Commerce and the Maywood Chamber of Commerce maintain online business directories. If those don’t suffice, call them up.
Refresh your memory
What better excuse to visit the local restaurant whose food you enjoyed at the Taste of Melrose Park or the Taste of Bellwood or Maywood Fest?
Need to jog your memory? Check out our past coverage of these events, because you might recall a vendor you enjoyed. Get the name, Google, retrieve contact online (hopefully they have a website or Facebook page) and voila! You’re in business.
Of course, there’s Facebook
There are all kinds of Facebook groups filled with thousands of passionate current, former and future Proviso Township residents who would love to share with you their local favorites (if they haven’t already, just scroll down and see). You may also find some area events that may include some local businesses as vendors.
Here’s a short, by no means comprehensive, list of a few Facebook groups that you may want to make your guide (just type them into the Facebook search engine):
- Bellwood, Hillside, Westchester Virtual Garage Sale
- I Love Maywood!!!
- Best of Proviso Township
- A Maywood History Society
- Maywood Movement
- I Grew Up In Maywood Illinois/Friends of Maywood Illinois
- You know you are from Maywood, Broadview and Bellwood if………!
You can listen to us
If you want some immediate advice, here’s a recommended business: AfriWare Books 1701 S. 1st Ave. (suite 400) in Maywood. Support them, not only because they support us, but because they’re just a great small business. Visit their website here.
But whatever you do, please give it a try …
In this age of Amazon, we know just how ubiquitous is the temptation to couch-shop, especially the weekend after Thanksgiving. Resist that urge.
At least get out and try to shop local, particularly in this great township we live in. Go and walk along a retail-heavy strip if you need to. Ask family or friends for suggestions about where to shop small and local.
At least make an attempt — that’s half the battle. VFP
