Last month, community members mourned the death of Bellwood resident Rosie Lee Nealy, the grandmother of Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson. Nealy died on Nov. 11 at the age of 84.

“”My mother was a teen mom, so my grandmother helped raise me,” Thompson said during a recent interview. “I call her mommy. She was a classy lady, I mean classy, and even though we didn’t have much growing up, my grandmother made sure that she provided for us.”

Nealy was born in Ashdown, Ark. on Jan. 3, 1934, according to a statement the mayor’s office released. After graduating from the Red River School District, Nealy worked for the University of California, Los Angeles for more than 20 years.

“She was a very active member of the Holy Light Baptist Church in Los Angeles and sang in the James Cleveland Choir,” Thompson said.

Nealy leaves behind her husband of more than 50 years, Charles Nealy; three sisters; a daughter; a granddaughter and four great-grandchildren. VFP
