Big Week (Dec. 5 – 12)

This week is full of holiday cheer in Proviso Township, with a range of events happening for you and your family to get into the holiday spirit. Below is just a sampling of those events:

Enjoy some holiday fun with the chambers

On Wednesday, Dec. 5, 5:30 p.m., at Mariella’s Banquet Hall, 124 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, the Bellwood and Maywood Joint Chambers of Commerce will host their annual Holiday Party. Cash bar. Live Jazz by the South City Collective Band. Christmas tree decorating contest. Pictures. Lots of fun! Bring a new toy or clothing for a girl or boy to be directly donated to Housing Forward.

Revel in tree lighting festivals 

On Wednesday, Dec. 5, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., inside of the gym at the Eisenhower Community Center, 700 Speechley Blvd. in Hillside, Memorial Park District will hold its 7th Annual Tree Lighting Festival.

The district will also hold a festival on Thursday, Dec. 6, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Sharp Community Center, 1609 N. 36th Ave. in Melrose Park.

To register for any of these events, call (708) 547-5400. Come make outdoor tree ornaments and bring your camera to take a photo with Santa. Donate to the local food pantry. Bring one canned food item per child.

Attend Triton’s Holiday Festival of Trees

On Thursday, Dec. 6, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Triton College, 2000 5th Ave. in River Grove, Triton will host its Holiday Festival of Trees. Enjoy free hot chocolate, cookies, holiday music and holiday photos. Also, take in a free holiday movie playing in the cafeteria. The purchase of a tree is not necessary to attend the festival.

Help Maywood light the village Christmas tree

On Friday, Dec. 7, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., outside of the Metra Station on Fifth Avenue and Main Street, the Maywood Environmental and Beautification Commission will host the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. The event will feature live reindeer, s’mores, fireworks, cowboys, horses, a puppet show, a dancing troop from Maywood Fine Arts, an electric train and more.

In addition, saxophonist Cecil Purchase and a three-piece band from Proviso Township High Schools District 209 will perform at the Maywood Public Library, 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., as part of the festivities. For more info contact, Grace-Rand at (708) 450-4492.

Have breakfast with Santa

On Saturday, Dec. 8, 8:45 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Best Western Hotel, 4400 Frontage Road in Hillside, the village of Bellwood will host the 16th Annual Breakfast With Santa featuring Cupcake’s Family Fun Time Clowns.

Admission: $10 (13 or older). $5 (3-12). $8 (seniors 65 and older). Tickets must be presented at the door. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please arrive at 8:45 a.m. Breakfast served prompts at 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. only. Note: Tickets were to be sold until Nov. 26. Take in a holiday bazaar

On Saturday, Dec. 8, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Proviso Math and Science Academy, 8601 Roosevelt Rd. in Forest Park, the Maywood Neighborhood Improvement Association will present the Maywood Youth Celebration and Holiday Bazaar. All are welcome.

This family event will feature vendors, entertainment, popcorn, music, face painting, a dance challenge, an open mic and much more. For vendor info, call (708) 227-0057.

Enjoy a Christmas sing-along

On Saturday, Dec. 8, 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, the library will host the 5th Annual Maywood Library Christmas Sing Along. For more info, (708) 343-1847.

Take in an iconic holiday movie

On Wednesday, Dec. 12, 5 p.m., at the Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, the library will host a screening of the movie Home Alone as part of its Christmas movie series. For more info, call (708) 343-1847. VFP
