Students at Proviso West High School, 4701 Harrison St. in Hillside, will soon walk onto a renovated indoor track. The new track is set to debut sometime in January, district officials said.

The renovations include “a new floor on the upper deck, a new sound system, placing electrical wiring where it is needed for electronic timing, painting the ceiling and tiles, and other cosmetic improvements,” according to a document drafted in September by district officials.

The Proviso Township High Schools District 209 school board began contemplating the track’s renovation in the summer.

During a school board meeting in May, Todd Drafall, Proviso Township High Schools District 209’s former chief financial officer, said that the track at West’s indoor field house needs more than $99,000 worth of repairs.

“Overall, the track is in poor condition and is about the end of its life. The repair costs are estimated at $99,000,” Drafall explained at the time. “We believe more repairs would be needed in the next two years above that amount. A complete replacement of the track is estimated at $650,000. Repair is not an economical option at this point.”

Back in September, the board allocated $708,605 to hire Kiefer USA, an athletic surface design and installation company based in Lindenhurst, Ill., to replace the track.

During a meeting on Dec. 11, district officials said that the renovated track is expected to be completed by Jan. 11. VFP
