A Maywood-Melrose Park-Broadview District 89 student recently took second place in a prominent Spelling Bee contest, good enough to allow her to advance to the next round and to get one step closer to going to the national competition.

Trisha Truong, an 8th-grader at Stevenson Middle School, 1630 N. 20th Ave. in Melrose Park, took second-place after 22 rounds in the 9th Annual West 40 ISC Scripps Spelling Bee, held Feb. 4 in Western Springs.

Truong will advance to the 9th Regional ISC Scripps Spelling Bee Championship, held Feb. 20 at McClure J. High School in Western Springs.

The winner of the regional competition advances to the National Scripps Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May. That annual event is broadcast live on ESPN and ESPN3. VFP
