There’s a lot happening this week in Proviso Township for you and your family. Below is a small sampling of events in the township:
Attend a town hall — Surviving R-Kelly and Beyond
On Wednesday, Feb. 13, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at Euclid Avenue United Methodist Church, 405 S. Euclid Ave. in Oak Park, the nonprofit Suburban Unity Alliance will host a town hall called Believe Survivors: Surviving R. Kelly & Beyond. Join student leaders, survivors, teachers and others as we discuss and identify ways to combat the pervasive and systemic issues that lead to hyper-sexualization, victimization and silencing of primarily women and children. This event is free.
Delight in Rotary’s Lunch & Leadership Black History Month series
On Thursday, Feb. 14, 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Meal of the Day Cafe inside of Eisenhower Tower, 1701 S. 1st Ave. in Maywood, the Maywood-Proviso Rotary Club will host guest speaker Donnie Nicole Smith, the executive director of Art and Culture (formerly Donda’s House), as part of its Lunch & Leadership: A Black History Month Series. The deadline for parents in Proviso Township High Schools District 209 to take the 5Essentials Survey is Feb.15. This survey will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about Proviso Township High Schools District 209. Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at PTHS D209 and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. Take the survey here.
Enjoy a movie screening and discussion
On Saturday, Feb. 16, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, enjoy a screening of the movie, “The Hate U Give,” and a book discussion following the film. Anyone under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The event is to honor Black History Month. For more info, call (708) 343-1847.
Revel in Black History story time
On Saturday, Feb. 16, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., at Afriware Books, located inside of Eisenhower Tower, 1701 S. 1st Ave. (Suite 400) in Maywood, celebrate Black History Month with a special story time with stories about, or written/illustrated by, African Americans, read by local community leader Anna Hodges. This event is hosted by the Broadview Public Library.

On Wednesday, February 20, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., join Theo Maynard from Premier Medicare Benefits at this free educational seminar to learn about Medicare Advantage/Supplements, Part D Prescription Drug coverage, and more.
