LETTERS: Help Send Our Students To Washington, DC

Tuesday, February 12, 2019 || LETTERS || @maywoodnews

As a Trustee serving the Village of Maywood, I recognize the importance of motivating young people to be interested in, and involved with, the inner workings of government. Throughout the history of our country, young people have played vital roles in shaping, not only our communities, but also policy at the national level. I strongly believe that their voices should be heard at every level of government.

That is why I am asking for your support in sending 5 students from the Maywood community to participate in the National League of Cities (NLC) Congressional City Conference as Youth Delegates.

The conference will take place on March 9-13 in Washington, D.C.; and it brings together more than 1,000 elected and appointed city leaders to focus on the federal policy issues that are important to local governments.  All conference events are open to Youth Delegates.

NLC is a bipartisan organization dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. Throughout the year, NLC advocates for cities and towns in Washington, D.C. through full-time lobbying and grassroots campaigns. The conference will include sessions and learning opportunities where the youths can learn how to strengthen our youth programs and advocate for our city’s concerns as they address federal lawmakers, while improving their leadership skills.

The full price conference fee for Youth Delegates (and Adult Allies) is $150.00. Here is the breakdown of anticipated additional conference costs:

  • Roundtrip Airfare: $2,309
  • Transportation:
  • Hotel: $5,313
  • Meals: $1500
  • Conference Fee: $900.00 ($150 per delegate)

The total costs associated with attending this conference are: $10,022.

With such a rich offering of educational content and the chance to share their insights with members of Congress, the White House, and federal agency representatives, the Village of Maywood will benefit from their attendance at the Congressional City Conference.

If there’s any further information I can provide to support my request, please do not hesitate to call me at (708) 261-9217. VFP
